Celebrating Developmental Disability Pride MonthGoodwill is coming to Grove City!

On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, marking a pivotal moment in the fight for disability rights. Every July, in honor of this historic day, we celebrate Disability Pride Month. According to ada.gov, the ADA ensures that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to enjoy employment opportunities, purchase goods and services, and participate in state and local government programs.

In celebration of Disability Pride Month, two artists from the Goodwill Columbus Art Studio and Gallery shared their experiences of living proudly with a disability.

JoJo Morton
At 75 years old, JoJo Morton reflects on her childhood when she was often teased by her peers. She recalls being called names while getting on the school bus and feeling sad about being excluded. Despite these challenges, her family did everything they could to uplift her and help her recognize her worth and talents. JoJo wants to share a powerful message with society: “Yes, I do have a disability – but I can do anything! I’m human just like anybody else. You don’t know what we can do, don’t label us!”

Larken Janson-Tidd
Similarly, 21-year-old Larken Janson-Tidd has experienced exclusion throughout her life. She says, “I appreciate people getting to know me and not just my disability.” To promote inclusion and celebrate our differences, Larken wrote a book titled Let’s Be Friends. JoJo and Larken want to be seen for who they are, not just their disabilities.

JoJo and Larken have both overcome significant challenges and have much to be proud of. Larken had to relearn to walk twice in her life and now enjoys a greater sense of independence through her job. JoJo has become confident in advocating for herself and has honed her skills, leading to her having her apartment. She uses her disability to prove to herself that she is a champion – that is disability pride.
