What is Developmental Disabilities Awareness?
A recognition to raise the awareness of the support and success for individuals with developmental disabilities and to provide the opportunities they need to reach their fullest potential.
What is a developmental disability?
Developmental disabilities are impairments in physical, learning, language, or behavioral development, and include:
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Cerebral palsy
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
- Learning or intellectual disabilities
- Hearing loss
- Vision impairment
- Other developmental impairments
How can you champion individuals with developmental disabilities?
- Use people-first language!
- Emphasize individuals abilities v.s. limitations
- Avoid language that implies negative stereotypes
- Create and uplift inclusive environments, events, and organizations for individuals with all ranges of abilities
Services for individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities
Adult Day Services
- Day program that offers individuals the opportunity to learn, grow and advance through exploration and volunteerism in the communities where they live.
Work & Community Services
- Day program that provides support, community-integrated work and activity opportunities, vocational habilitation, activity groups and socialization programs, all in a safe, structured and caring environment.
Residential Services
- In-home care for individuals to receive support with daily care and hygiene, transportation and community involvement, and empowerment in daily living.
Project Search
- A 24-week program that provides participants with direct work experience in a logistics-focused Job Readiness Training program, as well as soft skills development in communication, personal hygiene, self-advocacy, and professional etiquette.
