Goodwill Columbus Partners with Lynn Hetherington Becker
At Goodwill Columbus, we see possibility in the unexpected. Every donated item has the potential to begin a new chapter, whether it finds a new home, supports job training and community programs or becomes the foundation for something entirely original.
That spirit of transformation is at the heart of our growing partnership with Columbus-based artist Lynn Hetherington Becker.
Our connection with Lynn began through Goodwill Columbus’ collaboration with Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD). As students explored how donated materials could be reimagined through fashion and design, Lynn shared her work, creative process and experience as a mentor. Her perspective encouraged students to experiment, look beyond an item’s original purpose and discover inspiration in materials that may otherwise have been overlooked.
The collaboration highlighted the natural connection between art and Goodwill’s commitment to reuse. For artists, makers and designers, Goodwill stores offer more than clothing and household goods. They provide an ever-changing collection of colors, textures, materials and objects ready to inspire a new idea.
That shared belief in creative possibility led to our next collaboration: bringing Lynn’s Babes in Toyland collection to Goodwill Columbus.
Created using hundreds of thrifted toys and found objects, Babes in Toyland features four elaborate wearable-art looks inspired by frequently donated items. Each piece has been carefully constructed by hand through a detailed process of cleaning, cutting, shaping and assembling the materials. The results blur the lines between fashion, sculpture and performance while inviting viewers to reconsider what discarded objects can become.
Goodwill Columbus will celebrate the opening of the collection on October 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. at our Clintonville Retail Store and Job Training Center, located at 5300 N. High St. The open-house-style event will offer guests an opportunity to experience the collection, learn more about Lynn’s artistic process and see creative reuse in an entirely new way.
The wearable-art pieces will remain on display at the Clintonville location throughout October, giving shoppers and community members additional opportunities to view the collection beyond opening night.
Through this partnership, we hope to continue building meaningful connections with Columbus’ artists, students and creative organizations. Goodwill Columbus can be a valuable resource for artists at every stage of their work, offering affordable materials, unexpected inspiration and countless opportunities for experimentation.
More importantly, collaborations like this demonstrate that sustainability does not have to limit creativity. In fact, reuse can expand it. An object that has reached the end of one purpose may be at the beginning of another, waiting for someone to see it differently.
We invite the community to join us for our Night of Wearable Art on October 3 beginning at 6 p.m., when we will unveil the collection at our Clintonville location.
