Cody (she/hers) has been involved with Goodwill Columbus for many years in many capacities, but she is currently learning front desk skills at our Work & Community Services (WCS) facility. Goodwill’s WCS program empowers individuals with developmental and behavioral disabilities by offering adult day support, community-integrated work, and activity opportunities.
“When I first came to WCS, I was scared and nervous. I didn’t think I would like it, but when I met the people who work here, I got used to them. They became one big family to me,” Cody said.
In her front desk role, Cody answers the phone, assists guests, restocks office supplies, decorates the lobby, serves as a Goodwill ambassador, and much more.
“I do many activities here,” Cody explained. “I was in the Pride parade, I participate in the Harmony concerts, I was a penguin for the Christmas talent show.”
Tiffany Martin, Director for WCS, said, “We work with Cody to be the best she can be. We honor who she is. Not everybody can work at our front desk; you have to earn and keep that trust. She learns things like boundaries and accountability. Different parts of Cody’s life have been challenging, but we know she can be successful outside of these doors. Our goal for Cody is for her to move on from WCS.”
Outside of Goodwill, Cody is involved in Secure Haven, Special Olympics, and The Big Table, where she serves as an emcee for various table topics. She is also on the Human Rights Committee through her residential provider, Alvis.
“There is so much I do with this job that I never thought I would do in my life, and I am grateful and honored. I enjoy myself here at WCS, and they enjoy me,” Cody said. “I love everybody here, but I am most honored to work with Miss Tiffany. If you see Cody, you will see Miss Tiffany. She is a big support for me. WCS is family to me. If I need something, they are there for me. My mom raised me to be the best I can be, and that’s what I am doing here at WCS.”
