Students’ looks on display at local Goodwill stores through April
(Columbus, Ohio) — Goodwill Columbus and Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) have partnered for the first time to bring a unique, hands-on design experience for its Fashion Design program students. Using materials sourced from Goodwill Columbus stores, the students learned about taking a sustainable and accessible approach to their craft while designing a final look.
The looks will be on display at four different Goodwill Columbus locations through April 30, offering the students the ability to showcase their work to a large audience.
“It was so fun to collaborate with the incredible team at CCAD for this project, and we can’t wait for everyone to see the impressive looks the students created,” said Ryan D. Burgess, CEO of Goodwill Columbus. “Each design is unique in its own right and shows off the true versatility of shopping sustainably and secondhand—even when you’re designing something new.”
In February, students in CCAD’s Introduction to Fashion Design class visited Goodwill Columbus’s Brice Road location where they toured the warehouse and store and learned about Goodwill’s mission. Local fashion designer Xantha, who recently partnered with Goodwill to champion sustainable fashion through the creation of her own collection of looks, is serving as a mentor on the project and educating students on upcycled materials and a sustainable approach to design. All the students had a shopping day at Goodwill using provided gift cards to gather the materials needed for the project. Additionally, they had the opportunity to present their design research and final garments to Goodwill.
“At CCAD, we create classroom experiences that partner a company or community organization with students to create actual, real products. It gives the students real-world experience with both their creative craft and professional skills,” said Nicole Monahan, CCAD Associate Vice President for Creative Careers & Collaboration. “Goodwill provided our students with a valuable sustainability perspective and community connection that will be important for their professional futures.”
After several weeks of creation, the students’ completed designs will be displayed at the following Goodwill Columbus locations:
– Whitehall/Town & Country Retail Store – 52 Robinwood Ave. Columbus, Ohio 43213
– Clintonville Retail Store – 5300 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio 43214
– Reynoldsburg Retail Store – 2675 Brice Rd., Columbus, Ohio 43232
– Morse Rd. Retail Store – 5130 N. Hamilton Rd., Columbus, Ohio 43230
All the designs are viewable to the public during each of the stores’ normal business hours.
