Goodwill Columbus Launches A Clothing Recycling Pilot

Goodwill Columbus Launches A Clothing Recycling Pilot Program
Goodwill Columbus is thrilled to partner with SWACO and Circular Thrift to pilot a unique program to recycle end-of-life textiles.
“Goodwill is proud to participate in this pilot program, which allows our generous donors to thoughtfully give their textiles a second life, while also helping us support individuals getting a second chance at success in our community.”
-Ryan D. Burgess, CEO of Goodwill Columbus
About The Pilot Program:
Tired of throwing away old clothes? SWACO, alongside local municipalities and select Goodwill locations, is piloting a new program to recycle stained, ripped, or worn-out textiles that can’t be donated. (Always donate usable clothing first!)
Clothing and textile recycling opportunities aren’t widespread yet, but the technology and infrastructure needed to recycle our clothing are evolving quickly, and you can help! These “end-of-life” items will be transformed by Leigh Fibers into new products, from insulation to home furnishings. Your participation helps divert waste from landfills and builds a stronger U.S. recycling industry. Let’s make a difference together!
What happens at the end of the pilot? We hope to demonstrate that we can collect enough end-of-life clothing in the right categories to design an ongoing, cost-effective collection program. We consider this a true “field experiment,” and we will learn a lot.
Where can I recycle textiles?
Currently, you can drop off end-of-life clothing at one Goodwill Columbus location, with another starting June 16th:
- 5th Ave Attended Donation Center: 1759 W. 5th Avenue
- Campus Retail Store: 2550 N. High Street (accepting end-of-life donations starting June 16, 2025)
What makes an End-of-Life textile?
“End-of-life” textiles are items that are no longer suitable for reuse or traditional donation due to:
- Stains
- Rips
- Holes
- General excessive wear
Important: If your textiles are in good condition and can still be worn or used, please donate them to Goodwill or other Franklin County charities before considering this recycling program.
