Goodwill Gladiators Will Be Recognized By City Council For 2014 Special Olympics USA Games Gold

 The Columbus City Council will recognize The Ohio Women’s Special Olympics Basketball team members from Columbus, including two women from the Goodwill Gladiators, for bringing home gold at the 2014 Special Olympics USA games.

Why:    Goodwill Gladiators, and sisters, Amy and Candice Williams, 32, of Dublin were among 64 Special Olympic athletes chosen to represent Team Ohio at the games.  The Team Ohio Women’s Basketball team had a strong showing at the national games, brining home gold after a final 23-6 win over Team Missouri.


More Information: The Special Olympics program at Goodwill Columbus provides adult participants with developmental disabilities and other barriers sports training and competition opportunities. The Goodwill Columbus Gladiators compete in Special Olympic tournaments at the local, state, regional, national, and international levels. Sports include bowling, basketball (both men’s and women’s teams,) track and field, tennis, golf, softball, soccer and flag football.

The 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, held June 14 – 21 in Princeton, N.J., celebrated the Special Olympics movement while promoting the ideals of acceptance and inclusion through sport and highlighting the abilities of athletes with intellectual disabilities.
